We celebrated Earth Day 2022 by planting trees young school going children in Kitui County, Kenya.

We’re working with Environment and Agroforestry Foundation (EAF) to promote the conservation and restoration of the riparian forests within the Black Volta Basin catchment areas in Northwest Ghana.

Through training on agroforestry and alternative land restoration techniques, this project is supporting communities in Katavi, Western Tanzania to build resilient and sustainable futures.

To celebrate International Women’s Day we joined with community members and students at a school tree planting event in Masaka District, Uganda.

The Trees for Livelihoods project seeks to restore Kakamega forest whilst promoting women’s participation and inclusion in sustainable community development projects. 

In Burford, West Oxfordshire, our partner, Nature and Nurture is inspiring and mobilising local community groups to protect, enhance and restore their local landscape.

Over the last year, 300 women have been trained on grafting and growing fruit trees which are being planted in their local communities, providing them with an income while also reducing the pressure on the ancient forest.

There are big commitments being made at COP26. But we are proud to be working with communities to do something concrete for the environment.

By promoting women’s participation, individuals will benefit from their focus on encouraging others and utilising the environment to improve livelihoods.

In Kenya, there are 1,100 native tree species, of which 10% are threatened with extinction. We are working with the communities and partners to ensure that none of Kenya’s tree species become extinct.

On this day, we’d be planting a native hedge – 60 bare-root saplings of Beech, Hornbeam, Hazel, Hawthorn, Blackthorn and Wayfaring Tree.

The project is a wonderful practical way of supporting women, of educating women and giving them the opportunity to experience empowerment.

At Christmas time last year we raised money for our good friend Noormichuki, and her tree planting project in the Mara, Kenya. As one of the first woman tree planters of this region, we were incredibly excited to support her in setting up new seedling nurseries and train other women in her community.

In 2007 this land was unproductive farmland. Two streams flowed sluggishly through it to form a boggy field. With over 1,000 trees have been planted to transform the land and landscape.

In 2017 our partner in Uganda, Pro Biodiversity Conservationists PROBICOU went to court. Fighting for the rights of local communities to conserve and use Kafuga Forest products to sustain their livelihoods.

This project succeeded in providing a source of livelihoods to vulnerable communities, by creating a shared source of income and access to fast-maturing fruit and nut trees, improving livelihood and food security for 160 households in Embu County, Kenya.

Oxford City Farm was set up a few years ago on a site in East Oxford as a space where people can grow food together, learn new skills, and meet new people.

Our partners, Mpingo Conservation Development Initiative (MCDI) have just reported a very successful year in the restoration of the very biodiverse and threatened Miombo forest habitat.
