One year on in Kakamega

Last year, you generously joined us in our Big Give Christmas Campaign where we raised money for a project in Kakamega, Western Kenya.

This project was about planting trees that improve livelihoods and working specifically with women, who all too often bear the brunt of forest management without the benefits.

Over the last year, 300 women have been trained on grafting and growing fruit trees which are being planted in their local communities, providing them with an income while also reducing the pressure on the ancient forest.

Our partner Rose, who we introduced you to last year, tells us more about what the project is all about and what it has achieved.

Trees are so important

Clementina Rose Andala, was one of the women involved in this project. She said, “Avocados, besides being used as food, can be used to generate income once sold. Helping us to pay school fees for the children or even build a house. One of the big advantages of this project is that it can be done on a small scale farm and the produce will be high.”

“We were taught how to plant and graft avocado trees, the correct spacing between the avocados and the amount of vegetation you can grow on your fare. his project helps women be self-employed. I want to congratulate our donors so much. Trees are so important in the life of human beings. These trees are very good for all the women.”

The Big Give Christmas Challenge 2021

Thank you to everyone who donated to our Big Give appeal last year. This year’s Big Give Christmas Challenge will also raise money for a project in Kenya, community tree planting at the Saiwa National Park.

This project will protect endemic biodiversity of the Saiwa National Park while improving the livelihoods of local communities worst effected by environmental damage. Through tree planting and training we aim to reduce soil and wetland degradation, benefiting local communities and wildlife.

Once again, every pound that is donated, will be doubled! That’s one donation, twice the impact.
