Our partners, Mpingo Conservation Development Initiative (MCDI) have just reported a very successful year in the restoration of the very biodiverse and threatened Miombo forest habitat.

Sunday 8th March marks International Women’s day. What better time to celebrate one of our own UK tree planting women: Sue Pitt. Over the past four years, Sue has facilitated the planting of over 1000 trees and helped vulnerable adults improve their well-being through nature.

Since 2004, Nathalie Raharilaza has worked for the tree planting project “Ny Tanintsika” as its Programme Manager, in S.E Madagascar. Between 2018 and 2019, she and her team managed to restore over 47 ha of forest and plant 35,000 trees. Today she shares her thoughts on the important role women play in community development and nature conservation.

We had the chance to interview Margret Masika, one of the chairwomen of the Alpha Women Empowerment Initiative (AWEI), a tree planting organisation near Kasese in Uganda.

This is a success story about how Ny Tanintsika restored 47 ha of forest in S. E. Madagascar in one year.

Thanks to funding from Guernsey Overseas Aid, in March ITF began a new project in Madagascar: Better Lives for People of the Forest Corridor. This partnership brings together two of ITF’s existing partners, EDENA (Education Development Environment Naturel) and Ny Tanintsika.

Böðvar Jónsson, who is thought to be the only ever Member of ITF from Iceland, contacted us to tell us about Skógar and the reforestation taking place there.

Thanks to many generous donations, we raised £10,390 in early December. This figure rose to £11,435 in February. With this funding, we’ve launched ‘My 20 Trees and Me’ tree planting prject with schools across Nakuru County, Kenya in partnership with the youth-led group, Globe Gone Green.

As the Fruit-full Communities project comes to the end of its third and final year this seems like a good moment to reflect on what has been achieved.

Project update from our partners Masaka District Landcare Chapter (MADLACC) in the central region of Uganda who have recently completed an agroforestry project that sought to reduce poverty levels and improve food security for local communities.

A total of 800 households have planted trees on their farms and 60 different species of native tree were planted as part of the project. Farmers have been taught new skills, such as seed collection and tree nursey establishment to ensure the continuation of these new farming methods in the future.
