Project Update: Trees For Livelihoods Launched in Mali
50 local people gathered with dignitaries and district administrators to witness the launch of the Trees 4 Livelihoods programme, representing the communities of Konna, Ouro-Modi, Borondougou and Mopti in Mali.
The four-year programme has been funded by the National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund and a grant from ITF’s Africa Drylands Programme, and will be delivered on the ground by our partner Sahel Eco.
Trees 4 Livelihoods will support local people in 29 villages address and reverse the downward spiral of deforestation, land degradation and food insecurity.
The project team have been recruited with 4 trainees who will assist with project delivery.
The launch event marks a positive declaration of intent, as the Mayors of each community made speeches on behalf of all involved in the project. The Mayor of Konna explained how they had been involved in designing the project and their main priorities for the next 5 years.
Almost 28,000 people live in the 29 villages which make up the 4 communes, and smallholder farmers in dryland areas will be able to adopt more sustainable land management practices, support the restoration of tree cover, reduce erosion and improve the fertility of the soil.
