International Day for Biological Diversity 2022

This International Day for Biological Diversity, we are celebrating all life on earth, from microorganisms, to plant and animal life.

All life on earth is interconnected. And each living organism plays a vital role in sustaining life on Earth.

Biodiversity loss

Climate change is devastating ecosystems worldwide and playing a role in the alarming loss of biodiversity across the planet.

Forests and the biodiversity found within them, continue to be under threat due to over exploitation, unsustainable land use among other factors.

At ITF we know that healthy ecosystems and biodiversity are vital in ensuring a high quality of life and food and water security for communities worldwide. That is why we work with communities at the forefront of the climate crisis to restore degraded landscapes and protect forests for increased biodiversity, soil conservation and water regulation.

Men and trees, water and trees, man and water are inseparable. This is the trinity of life.
— Richard St. Barbe Baker, Land of Tané (1956)

What are we doing

In partnership with communities, we are planting trees to create sustainable livelihoods and reduce pressure on forests. We prioritise native and threatened tree species, promote agroforestry and non-timber forest products.

Planting the right trees, in the right places and for the right reasons, increases yields for farmers, improves soil health and boosts income and food security for rural communities.

“I have planted over 150 tree seedlings from the project in my riparian land. I am sure in the next few years there will be no soil erosion along the riverbanks. I have known how to raise and manage a tree nursery.”

Doris, participant of Greening Maniyiirani Water Intake, River Kathita project, Kenya.

Thanks to our supporters, we are helping communities to become less vulnerable to droughts, floods and wildfires, all of which are driven by climate change and subsequent biodiversity loss.
