How we can harness the power of trees to create flourishing farms

In Meru County, Kenya, we’re working with over 1,000 small-holder farmers to plant trees that boost biodiversity and create a flourishing environment for their farms.

Farmers are embracing agroforestry, a sustainable farming technique that has the potential to transform landscapes and lives, thanks to the support of ITF and a local community-based organisation, Meru Forest Environment Conservation and Protection.

Agroforestry involves growing diverse trees alongside their crops, smaller bushes and shrubs.

Last month, we gave eager community members over 5,000 tree seedlings to plant and grow on their farms. From Hass avocados and southern silky oak to native species like Meru oak.

Planting seeds of change

Thanks to agroforestry, not only will trees planted help improve their harvests but they will also safeguard the environment by boosting biodiversity.

As trees planted take root, they will enhance soil fertility and promote the growth of healthy produce by drawing water and vital nutrients from deep in the ground.

This will eventually translate into higher and better-quality yields, that enable these farmers to provide for their families and contribute to the growth of the local economy.

And farmers can also supply their livestock with ample amounts of fresh and highly nutritious feed by pruning and using leaves from trees like southern silky oak.

Additionally, agroforestry offers a solution to pests and plant diseases that pose significant challenges for farmers.

By introducing diverse trees on their plots, farmers can create a conducive environment for natural predators and reduce the need for harmful synthetic pesticides that threaten the health of their farms and local wildlife.

Agroforestry - a way forward

The power of agroforestry lies in its ability to improve livelihoods, promote biodiversity, and safeguard our natural world. And by embracing agroforestry, small-holder farmers in Meru County will witness a positive transformation in their lives and the landscapes they depend on.
