Celebrating the restorative power of trees on Mazingira Day

October 10th is Mazingira Day, a national day in Kenya for environmental awareness and tree planting.

And it's a wonderful opportunity to highlight the remarkable transformations taking place in Kitui and Tharaka Nithi counties. These counties are in the arid regions of Kenya and are particularly susceptible to the impacts of climate change.

The counties faced dwindling water sources and deteriorating lands. However, due to the unwavering commitment of local communities, new life is flourishing.

A key part of this revival has been along the banks of the Kathita River in Tharaka Nithi. Once struggling under the strain of neglect, the river is now flourishing, thanks to the trees planted along the riverbanks. These trees are helping to keep the soil stable and hold water in the ground. Fish, crabs, and other aquatic creatures are returning, breathing new life into the river and benefiting the people who depend on it.

None of this would be possible without the involvement of local communities. They’ve come together to create over 14 community nurseries, where they grow trees and take charge of the restoration efforts. From nurturing young seedlings to planting and caring for the trees, their hands-on commitment has made all the difference. This isn’t just about planting trees—it’s about planting hope and responsibility for a brighter, greener future.

Carefully chosen tree species, like neem, along with fruit trees such as mangoes and oranges, are providing more than just environmental benefits. These trees not only help restore the land but also provide shade, food, and income opportunities. The fruit trees, in particular, are helping families by offering fresh produce they can sell or use, bringing a sense of stability to their lives.

Beyond improving the environment, the project has truly transformed the lives of many. The nurseries have created jobs and income opportunities, especially for women and young people. With the money earned from selling seedlings, people have been able to buy essentials like water tanks, livestock, and even fund their children's education. It’s proof that when you invest in nature, you invest in the wellbeing of communities.

Of course, the road hasn’t been without its bumps—challenges like low rainfall and tough infrastructure made the work harder at times. But the rewards have been worth every step. The results are already clear to see: the land is greener, the water flows stronger, and local forests are growing back. This project is more than an environmental initiative—it’s a story of communities coming together to heal their land and improve their lives.

On this Mazingira Day, we want to take a moment to honour and celebrate the incredible resilience, passion, and hard work of the communities in Kitui and Tharaka Nithi. Despite facing various environmental challenges, these communities have demonstrated remarkable dedication and perseverance in their efforts to restore and conserve the land. Their commitment serves as a powerful reminder that when people unite and work together, they have the ability to not only rejuvenate the land but also to cultivate hope and prosperity for all members of the community.

Happy Mazingira Day!
