Transformative trees

Would a tree change your life? How about a handful of seedlings? For Margaret, trees changed everything.

“This project came when I was almost giving up,” Margaret Mutevesi told us.

A gift from you this Christmas could change the life of someone like Margaret, by planting trees which fight poverty and land degradation.

“When the project came, I was able to sell seedlings and received money. I used the money to buy fertilizer for my crops and offset my debts. I feel free. I am happy to have been part of the project.”

Margaret Mutevesi, Kenya

Deforestation threatens us all, but rural communities in East Africa are bearing the brunt. Rising temperatures. Natural disasters. Growing poverty and lack of food.

But it’s not too late.

Margaret was having sleepless nights, in Kakamega county, Kenya. Her debts and diminishing crops were keeping her awake. But then she joined our project with local partners, Women in Water and Natural Resources Conservation.

Together we are restoring 125 hectares of degraded forest to bring back a resilient ecosystem that supports wildlife, people and planet to thrive.

“When the project came, I was able to sell seedlings and received money,” she says. “I used the money to buy fertilizer for my crops and offset my debts.

“I feel free. I am happy to have been part of the project.”

This is what holistic tree planting can do. Will you donate this Christmas and help frontline communities to plant trees that provide food and income for today and protect nature for tomorrow?

A handful of seedlings can transform a life
A whole forest helps a continent

“The lost glory of this section of the forest is slowly coming back.

Many rivers had dried up due to degradation of this forest. Now we have enough rain and the River Yala is regaining life as it flows into Lake Victoria. This is very important to the whole African continent.

I am appealing to more well-wishers to chip in and support this cause by empowering the community to plant more trees and protect this unique ecosystem.”

Aggrey Mambili, Project Supervisor.

At ITF, we do more than put trees in the ground. Our projects are stopping future deforestation.

In rural Kenya, where up to 90% of people depend on wood for cooking, we’re rolling out eco-stoves that are changing the game.

The old stoves devoured firewood and belched out smoke. Ecostoves use 70% less wood and cook quicker. For women like Caroline Chisiai – who are responsible for gathering firewood and cooking – this frees up more time for work.

“I can have time to go work as a tree scout and make money.” says Caroline. In her role, she cares for the newly planted trees in our project – ensuring an impressive 90% survival rate.

“I am now a happy empowered woman.”

This Christmas, we want to raise £30,000 to restore forests and transform women’s lives through the power of trees.

Your generous gift this Christmas will help to:

  • Plant trees and establish tree nurseries with small community groups in East Africa.

  • Restore forests and ecosystems and protect our planet for future generation.

  • Help to support 6,000 people to grow trees that create a resilient source of income.

  • Plant trees that increase access to vital natural resources like food, water and medicine.

  • Ensure the trees thrive for generations.
