Lockdown silver linings
The effects of the Coronavirus have been devastating for so many people. What is special about humans though, is that we have an amazing ability to adapt and push ourselves on, despite our challenging circumstances. Its what lifted us out of the caves and made us the dominant species that we are today. This most recent global challenge has given us a new word for these abilities – “Pivoting”. Yes, we’re all busy pivoting away determined to maintain a happy, loving and abundant life, be that swapping house parties for zoom parties, city commutes for home working or Mediterranean holidays for Cornwall staycations.
In my mind, one of the most beneficial examples of pivoting we’ve seen is with our transport choices. Our skies are silent and our train carriages echo. Everyone has jumped on their bike!
As a bike fanatic, this is an absolute joy to see. People of all ages are back riding their bikes and realising the enormous health benefits that come with it – both for themselves and their environment. Riding mask-less in the fresh air, their body now powers their journey rather than fossil fuels, and they arrive feeling healthy and invigorated.
My pandemic experience has also been very bike centric. I had been riding and designing bikes for years but never found the time to launch my own bike brand. My yoga studio and fitness retreat businesses kept me busy seven days a week but when they were forced to shut over lockdown I was handed that most precious gift of time. It was during these first few lockdown months that I was finally able take Steed Bikes from drawing board to reality.
We’re so thankful to partner with International Tree Foundation. For every bike we sell, International Tree Foundation plants a tree on our behalf.
Fast forward twelve months and Steed Bikes was born. We offer two beautifully crafted single speed bike models designed for swift, smooth and stylish travel – the Stallion and the Thoroughbred. They start at £350 including delivery and come in Onyx Black, Atlantic Blue, Saffron Yellow and Midnight Black. Designed in my London studio, our handmade bikes are built with quality components that last the distance. So much so that we feel confident enough to offer a lifetime guarantee for every bike.
Our mission is to recapture the joyful sense of freedom and adventure that our childhood bike gave us and champion a more healthy, low impact way to travel. By offering affordable bikes that last, we hope not to contribute to the damage that “fast fashion” and disposable consumer culture has on our planet. However, the manufacture and delivery of our bikes do add to carbon emissions.
We believe the climate crisis is the single biggest threat to our planet. Mass deforestation and land degradation for food, materials and energy production has not only increased atmospheric carbon concentrations but also endangered the 350 million people around the world who depend directly on forests for their livelihoods.
That’s why we’re so thankful to partner with International Tree Foundation. For every bike we sell, International Tree Foundation plants a tree on our behalf. How wonderful is that? Choosing to travel by bike rather than fuel-powered transport reduces our carbon footprint, but with the help of International Tree Foundation we can do so much more. Now we can help support local communities, save fragile ecosystems, and tackle the climate crisis. And for this we are truly grateful.
