ITF have received a very positive 6 month report from the Forestry Development & Education Project based in Lamwo District, Northern Uganda.
The project is run by the British Consultancy Charitable Trust (BCCT) as part of the new Agro International Vocational Institute (AIVI). It aims to establish a softwood tree nursery to prepare for a major outreach programme. In this programme, ‘packages’ of demonstrable sustainable practices are supported by a widespread educational programme in the sustainable use of trees for building, in addition to fruit trees for income and diet.
Since June several one day farming courses have been run and these have been attended by up to 300 people each time. Topics included were teaching the value of trees as a resource, uses and purpose; the importance of indigenous species; advice on tree planting and after care.
Furthermore, soil improvement work on the nursery has been completed and seedlings are ready for planting. It is anticipated the tree nursery will be achieved by the end of the year.
