Community-led Forest Management
Trees 4 Livelihoods, a 4 year project supported by the Big Lottery Fund. is continuing to make progress in Mali.
An important issue for the local communities is their declining access to the Koubaye forest due to unsustainable management leading to the felling of trees.

75% of the Southern Aberdare Forest in Kenya has been lost since the 1970’s which now covers less than 1,000 hectares. Conflict between people and wildlife has grown as human settlements encroach further and further into the forest. Wild animal numbers have declined along with many indigenous tree species like the sycamore fig, which is considered sacred to the Kikuyu community.

Youth lead the way to help their community in Ugandan Forestry Scheme
For more than a decade the people of Wera county in Eastern Uganda have faced abductions and displacement by the Lords Resistance Army rebels and cattle rustling and raids by neighbouring communities. They are now returning to the area and beginning to resettle and reintegrate into normal life after many years of displacement in internal camps.
Green Wood on Greenslate Community Farm
Greenslate Farm is a recently established community farm based in Billinge to the west of Wigan. The farm has about 30 acres of land of which half is for arable, buildings and allotments and the rest is a mixture of meadow and woodland. The woodland is the result of self-seeding and consists almost totally of goat willow which is so dense in places that there is little biodiversity or habitat for wildlife.
Planting of 65,000 trees announced at the start of National Tree Week
In celebration of National Tree Week 65,000 trees will be planted in community projects in the UK and Africa over the next twelve months.
