On day 3 of the Big Give Christmas Challenge, we’re focusing on another important aspect of 20 Million Trees: the involvement of ‘women’s groups’.
What’s the Big Give? With the Big Give Christmas Challenge, for each £1 donated to 20 Million Trees, we receive £2! By donating here before Tuesday 5th December your donation can have double the impact. Thank you for your support.
Women in rural areas across many African countries are closely involved in crop cultivation, often more so than men. Alongside their farming work women also typically carry the bulk of household responsibilities like cooking, childcare, and collecting fuel wood and water.
In rural Kenya, ‘women’s groups’ often form as a way for women to share resources and help and strengthen one another through social ties.
Because of their close connection to the land, women’s groups are among the most active civil society organisations in tree planting efforts.
Many tree nurseries are run by women’s groups. The members benefit from access to seedlings for use on their land, as well as a share of the profits from sales.
Wamiti Women’s Group (Women of the Trees), on Mount Kenya, are working with our partners Mount Kenya Environmental Conservation (MKEC) to raise and plant trees in the degraded Mount Kenya forest, and produce seedlings for farms.
With shared savings from the nursery enterprise and improved incomes, Wamiti women are able to pay for crucial services such as education. Julian Wanja, a project manager with MKEC, remarks: “Every family in this group is able to educate their children and borrow funds for other projects”.
A member of the group says simply: “Whether there is money or not, the fact remains that we are here to plant trees for the benefit of all Kenyans.”
Through 20 Million Trees, working with MKEC, we are helping women farmers to improve their environment and livelihoods and advance their access to resources, with a positive knock-on effect for the wellbeing of their families.
Help us empower women through reforestation: Donate to 20 Million Trees here before 12pm on the 5th December and double your donation!
