Tree Resources – Bangladesh

The Tree Resources Project takes place in the Dhaka region of Bangladesh in the northern part of Dhamrai Upazila. The area is characterised by lowlying area and it is liable to flooding which in the past has severely degraded the land.

Planting a tree

The local community in Bostobdia village and Banglaparra village are trained to maintain the tree nurseries. Seeds are then given to skilled community members. Mixtures of native, non native and indigenous tree species are selected for their rapid growth, community demand, medicinal quality, fruits, quality of timber and favourable weather conditions.

ITF have been supporting the Tree Resources Project since 2006. Villagers now have a lot of fruit, timber, and fuel wood available to use for their families. Families have access to quality tree seedlings which they didn’t have before and have improved nutrition from fruit trees. Over 10,000 trees have been planted in community woodlots which will be an important source of wood and medicine.

Children and local people are learning the importance of planting trees both for environmental conservation and domestic use. The project will improve cash generation and help people to escape subsistence farming.
