With funding from The International Tree Foundation, NAIDD (New International Approach for Sustainable Development) is teaching local people about practical agro forestry techniques.
Tree seedlings from four nurseries are being used to demonstrate agroforestry to local farmers and community members. For each nursery, ten members of the local communities have been trained in tree nursery management. One of these is in Kumassi and involves seven teachers and thirty pupils from a local school. A huge interest has been shown in the nursery by the local communities and the pupils’ families.
The pupils are learning about growing trees and how to protect their environment. The trained community members have made 12 visits to this school and with every education visit the teachers and pupils receive further training on running their tree nursery and other specific issues such as the recycling of plastic bags into seedling pots.
