Growing Out of Poverty

The All Party Parliamentary Group on Agriculture and Food for Development have release an interesting report highlighting the benefits of promoting effective, ‘climate-smart’ agriculture in Africa. The report emphasises the need to channel funds for international development into initiatives that enable farmers to diversify and become more efficient.
In some African countries, as much as 90% of the population are subsistence farmers but, given the right support, they can be transformed into productive, economically active, well-fed contributors to their country’s GDP and national food security. Much of the work undertaken by ITF in Africa centers around promoting sustainable agroforestry to break the cycle between deforestation and poverty. This latest report is an encouraging indicator that there is a wider move towards this line of thinking.
